Travel Guidance

During your time at the University of Rochester, you may wish to travel internationally or domestically. In order to ensure smooth travel, we encourage you to plan ahead and carefully read the information on this page.

Travel notice

Given the current political climate and recent immigration-related developments in the United States, ISO recommends that ISO-sponsored students, faculty, and staff avoid traveling outside the U.S. at this time. If you choose to travel, please review the information below carefully before making plans.

If you are participating in a study or research abroad program, please review our latest guidance before finalizing any travel arrangements.

The 糖心传媒 also provides a secure system for faculty, staff, and students to register their travel plans and contact information. All University-sponsored or supported travel must be registered. The registry provides a convenient, centralized resource that supports emergency communication and access to University travel assistance services.

For additional federal policy information, please visit the 糖心传媒糖心传媒檚 Federal Updates FAQ page.

Possible travel risks

While ISO can help you prepare for smooth travel to the U.S. to the best of our ability, all new visa decisions and entry to the U.S. are ultimately subject to the discretion of U.S. Consulates and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). If you are experiencing a travel emergency when ISO is closed, please call听the听Department of Public Safety听(DPS) at +1 (585) 275-3333. They will contact the on-call ISO staff member who can help you. For more information about contacting ISO, please visit our website.

Please review the resources on this page so that you are prepared to re-enter the U.S. in your糖心传媒痸alid visa status. If, after reading this information, you have questions pertaining to your specific situation, please糖心传媒reach out to your immigration advisor糖心传媒痓efore finalizing your travel plans.

Domestic travel

If you are traveling糖心传媒domestically糖心传媒(within the U.S. but outside of Rochester and the surrounding area), we recommend that you carry your original immigration documents with you (passport, I-94 record print-out, Form I-20, DS-2019 or I-797). Although you won糖心传媒檛 be going through passport control during your domestic travel, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other law enforcement officers may stop individuals and ask for identification at their discretion.

When traveling within the U.S. by air, it is important to always carry the same immigration documents and follow the guidelines set by the糖心传媒. Please remember that a糖心传媒government-issued ID糖心传媒痠s required to be allowed to board a plane; university-issued ID is not sufficient! Check the糖心传媒切拇蒋before traveling each time since guidelines and regulations may change.

As an F-1 student, you may generally travel to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands without a valid F-1 visa, because these are U.S. territories. ICE states that you should carry a valid Form I-20 and an unexpired Form I-94. For the official guidance, see ICE糖心传媒檚 Travel 糖心传媒 F Visa page:

For day-to-day life in Rochester, you do not need to carry your original documents with you. However, we highly recommend making photocopies and carrying copies of your passport bio page, your I-94, and your DS-2019/I-20 (as applicable).

Entry requirements for other countries

If you are traveling to a country other than your country of citizenship, be sure to check with that country糖心传媒檚 embassy or consulate to see if you need a visa. Remember that you may need a transit visa for countries you pass through on the way to your destination. Any questions regarding entry requirements to countries other than the U.S. are outside ISO糖心传媒檚 area of expertise and cannot be answered by ISO advisors.

Required travel documents

Before returning to the United States, make sure you have all required travel and immigration documents with you. We recommend keeping your documents organized in a folder that you bring on every trip. Upon re-entry, use the appropriate immigration documents for your visa status.

After each entry to the United States, retrieve and review your Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) through the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) . Your I-94 is an electronic record that confirms your visa status and authorized period of stay, and a new record is created in most cases each time you enter the United States. Check your I-94 as soon as possible after arrival to make sure all information is correct.

Bring the following documents with you every time you travel outside the United States:

Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months into the future either when you enter the U.S. or beyond your duration of stay in the United States. An exception to this rule exists for certain countries to extend the validity of passports due to糖心传媒. People with passports issued by one of those countries can enter the U.S. until the date the passport expires.糖心传媒疘f you recently renewed your passport, you may need to carry your expired passport along with your new passport, if your F-1 or J-1/H-1B visa sticker is in the old/expired passport.

I-20/DS-2019 or I-797 approval form (Original Copy)

For F1/J1 visa holders: I-20/DS-2019 with valid travel signature upon reentry.

  • While you are an active J-1 scholar or a currently enrolled student, your travel signature is valid for one calendar year.听听If you are on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT, the travel signature is valid for 6 months.
  • Please note that a valid signature is only required for re-entry to the U.S. (not exit).
  • To obtain a new travel signature before your I-20/DS-2019 Program End Date, please submit the糖心传媒切拇蒋form in URcompass. Students on F-1 Post-Completion OPT or STEM OPT Extension should submit the听听form in URcompass.听We ask that you only submit reprint requests for a new travel signature if it is truly necessary, such as the signature being within a month of expiration or will expire before you return.

For H-1B visa holders: I-797 Notice of Approval of H-1B employment

Valid visa

If your visa is currently expired and you need to renew your visa while abroad, please read more about the糖心传媒切拇蒋in advance.

To check the validity of your visa, you can use the糖心传媒.糖心传媒疶he CEAC website allows you to track the status of your visa application and confirm its validity after issuance. To check your visa status, you will need the case number provided on the confirmation page of your DS-160 application.

Travel to countries neighboring the United States may qualify for糖心传媒automatic revalidation. The U.S. government allows travel to these countries with an expired visa if the duration of the trip is under 30 days. Please read the糖心传媒切拇蒋on automatic revalidation carefully.

Under current immigration rules, Canadian and (most) Bermudian citizens are not required to apply for a visa. The Department of State offers more information online:听,听.

Additional travel documents

Traveling abroad during certain stages of your educational journey might require that you bring more documents in addition to the documents listed above.

The sections below go into detail about additional documents and considerations for each stage. Border officials may or may not ask you questions pertaining to these documents, but if they do, having them on hand always helps.

While these documents are often not required, it糖心传媒檚 recommended you bring the following:

SEVIS Fee payment confirmation

The SEVIS Fee (I-901) payment confirmation can be printed online from the糖心传媒.

Evidence of employment
  • If you are on CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or are an employee: Bring evidence of your employment (offer letter, employment verification letter)
  • If you are a J-1 student on Academic Training (AT): Bring your AT authorization letter from ISO and Job offer/verification letter from your employer
  • If you are a J-1 scholar: Bring your 糖心传媒 offer letter
  • If you are an H-1B employee: Bring your 糖心传媒 offer letter and copies of 3 most recent pay statements

It is recommended that the employment letter should include the following information: position held/job title, duration/dates of that position, contact information for your supervisor or manager, and a description of the work (with clear indication for how the work is related to your field of study if you are a student).

For current students
  • Enrollment verification: It is recommended that you bring with you an糖心传媒Enrollment Verification糖心传媒痙ocument from the Registrar糖心传媒檚 Office or print a copy of your current course registration.
  • Financial resources evidence: Evidence of financial resources, such as the documents you submitted for your糖心传媒New Student Intake Form (NSIF).
  • If you are a Ph.D. student in a STEM field: A letter from your faculty advisor describing your research and academic plans.

OPT, STEM OPT, and Academic Training: Additional considerations

F-1 students on听OPT听辞谤听STEM OPT听and J-1 student on听Academic Training听should keep the following considerations in mind when preparing to travel outside the U.S. and return to the U.S.

F-1 students

If you are a currently enrolled student traveling before your program end date with a pending or approved OPT application, you will need to have the听travel documents outlined above.

After your program end date, traveling is generally permitted if you have a pending or approved OPT application.

Very important: your OPT application must be submitted and received by USCIS before you leave the U.S!听An OPT application must be submitted while physically in the United States, and traveling after your program end date without a pending OPT application (or any action that will extend your F-1 status, such as transferring your SEVIS record to a new program) will result in the loss of your F-1 status and the ability to apply for OPT.

Please be aware that if you travel after your program end date with a pending OPT application (or after your OPT end date with a pending STEM OPT application), and your application is denied by USCIS for any reason, you will not be eligible to return to the U.S. in F-1 status and re-apply.

For students applying for post-completion OPT:听It is recommended that you already have a job secured. Travel and reentry without employment is usually fine if you are returning before your OPT start date. If your OPT has already started, it is more important to have a job at the time of re-entry. Travel during your OPT unemployment time is higher risk and is not recommended.

J-1 students

If you are a currently enrolled student traveling before your program end date, you will need to have the听travel documents outlined above.

If you are a J-1 student on Academic Training (AT), it is recommended you bring with you your AT authorization letter from ISO and job offer/verification letter from your employer.

Travel preparation

Please refer to the section above for the list of required travel documents.听Note that while in the period of post-completion work authorization, the travel signature on听your听I-20/DS-2019 is valid for only 6 months.听Make sure to check the endorsement date on your I-20/DS-2019. If your signature is expiring, please submit the in URcompass.

When traveling during post-completion OPT, you should be prepared to explain the ways that your employment in the U.S. provides practical training for the degree you received.

Lastly, there is no regulatory limit on the duration of your travel abroad while on post-completion work authorization. Nevertheless, you should understand that the longer you are abroad, the more questions you may be asked upon re-entry. You should be prepared to explain to the CBP officer your time abroad and how you are still maintaining your F-1/J-1 status, keeping in mind that your employment authorization was granted for the purposes of working in the U.S.

Additional documentation to bring
  • You糖心传媒檒l want to bring听employment verification documentation糖心传媒攅ither an employment letter or proof of employment.
  • EAD card:听You should also bring an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card, if your work authorization is approved.
    • If not yet approved, have your I-797C receipt from the submission of your application with USCIS
  • Keep in mind logistics surrounding your EAD card:
    • If your application is already approved, you are expected to have your EAD card with you upon reentry.
    • Students who are abroad when their application is approved might not be able to physically retrieve their EAD card when it is mailed to their U.S. address.
    • Many students have had their EAD card mailed to trusted friends/family who send a photocopy of the EAD card to them. They will also print out the approval notice so that they can explain the situation to the border official if asked. While many students have successfully reentered the U.S. in such cases, you should be aware that this is another layer of risk.
