This chapter examines聽tensions聽in an online forum聽to explore how lack of a shared purpose has affected, and continues to affect, this online gaming-related fan site.聽Lammers poses聽a larger question regarding the necessity of a (single) shared purpose and if it needs to be made explicit and remain consistent within online fan sites. To pursue these questions,聽she qualitatively聽examined forum threads in which members of聽The Sims Writers糖心传媒� Hangout (SWH)聽discuss happenings and observed their practices around creating and sharing聽Sims聽fan fiction. Using Gee糖心传媒檚 (2004) theory of affinity spaces as a framework for making sense of this site,聽this聽analysis of the聽SWH聽forum adds to our understanding of the complex nature of online fan spaces.
