This process allows us to evaluate the invention's potential for commercialization and protection.\r\n\r\nWe encourage you to complete an Invention Disclosure as soon as you believe you\u2019ve discovered something unique with potential commercial value. It\u2019s crucial to submit your disclosure well before sharing your discovery publicly\u2014whether through publications, poster sessions, conferences, press releases, or other means. This evaluation will include its relationship to existing intellectual property, market size and growth potential, and the resources needed for further development. Additionally, the assessment will consider pre-existing rights, potential competition, and whether the invention could serve as the basis for a new business startup. Based on this review, UR Ventures will determine whether to pursue intellectual property protection or recommend continued development for protection at a later stage.","background_color":"#f4f4f4","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Step four: Protection<\/h2>","content":"If the invention is deemed suitable, UR Ventures will pursue IP protection, usually by filing a patent application. UR Ventures will engage outside counsel to draft a patent application based on detailed documentation of the invention provided by the researchers. Researchers also provide feedback on patent drafts.\r\n\r\nThere are three main types of patents:\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>Utility Patents<\/strong>: Cover new and useful processes, machines, manufactures, or compositions of matter. This is the most common type of patent and applies to a wide range of innovations, from technological devices to pharmaceuticals.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Design Patents<\/strong>: Protect new, original, and ornamental designs for manufactured products. These patents focus on the appearance rather than the functionality of an item.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Plant Patents<\/strong>: Granted to anyone who invents or discovers and asexually reproduces any distinct and new variety of plant.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\nThere are also two types of patent applications:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A <strong>provisional patent application<\/strong> is a temporary application that establishes an early filing date and allows the inventor to use the term \"patent pending\" for 12 months, without starting the official examination process. It does not mature into an issued patent unless the inventor files a corresponding non-provisional application within the 12-month period.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A <strong>non-provisional patent application<\/strong>, is the formal application required for obtaining a patent.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nWhile patents are important, they are not the only form of legal protection. Other protections include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Copyrights:<\/strong> Protect original works of authorship such as literature, music, art, and software.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Trademarks:<\/strong> Protect brand names, logos, and slogans that distinguish goods and services.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Trade Secrets:<\/strong> Confidential business information that provides a competitive edge, such as formulas, practices, designs, and processes.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Step five: Marketing<\/h2>","content":"UR Ventures technology licensing specialists lead the effort to identify and engage potential licensees, utilizing their industry expertise and connections.
