The will close its season with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThe Pinter PlaysÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”works by Nobel Prize-winning British playwright Harold PinterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”opening on Thursday, April 26.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThe key thing about Pinter is that he revolutionized modern drama,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ says Nigel Maister, the Russell and Ruth Peck Artistic Director of the theater program and the productionÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s director. Considered one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century, Pinter was a ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œmaster of the minimal and the malevolent,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ says Maister.

A double bill at Todd Theater, the production includes The Collection and The Lover, considered two of PinterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s most shocking one-act plays. Originally written for television, they were later transformed into stage plays. The Collection tells the story of infidelity and jealousy in two households: one same-sex couple and a heterosexual married couple. The Lover is about a couple who grapple with fantasy role-playing games.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s amazing acting material for the students,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ says Maister. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThe characters are fascinating. Each line is packed with action.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

PinterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s work and many elements of his writing style are so distinctive that the word ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œPinteresqueÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ has entered the theater lexicon. He is also known for the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œPinter Pause,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ a break in the dialogue when action takes place, though nothing is being said. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s filled with meaning, and that drives the narrative forward,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ says Maister.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThere is a sense in PinterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s work that the world outside of us is kind of out to get us, or is slightly malevolent or unknown,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Maister says. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œIn his plays, there is usually a domestic situation in which the world intrudes and while itÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s seldom violent, physically, thereÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s an enormous amount of violence being done under the surface.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

This is the first time the International Theatre Program has produced a Pinter play. The production crew includes Amy Rubin as set designer; Lux Haac as costume designer; Seth Reiser on lighting design; Obadiah Eaves as sound designer and composer; J. David Brimmer as fight director; and Alexa Scott-Flaherty as acting and voice coach.

Meredith Watson ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™18, who plays the character Stella in The Collection, thinks PinterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s work is something everyone should see. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s very thought provoking in a way you donÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t expect. ItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s jarring and unsettling to watch,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ she says. Watson will graduate in May with a double major in brain and cognitive sciences and in linguistics. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s a really brilliant piece.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s part of cultural literacy. ItÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s like seeing Shakespeare, or Arthur Miller, or a Tennessee Williams play,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ says Maister. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œYou need to have that experienceÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½
