Grotz, director of the UniversityÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s translation studies program, has been awarded a Literary Translation Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts to support the English translation of several poems by the Polish writer Jerzy Ficowski.

Through this network, Wilmot Cancer Institute and Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½” the stateÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s two largest cancer care and research institutions outside New York City ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½” will collaborate and expand genomic testing for cancer across the Finger Lakes and western New York region.

The game designer and author will speak to 200 elite high school students from 20 nations staying on the River Campus as part of the International Baccalaureate World Student Conference.

Nineteen high school students from Africa are staying on the River Campus through Aug. 7 as part of a pre-orientation program designed to prepare them for college this fall. Three will continue their education at the University of Rochester this fall.

Since 2010, the best estimate of the age of EarthÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s magnetic field has been 3.45 billion years. But now the Rochester researcher responsible for that finding has new data showing the magnetic field is far older.

Three members of the Class of 2014 have completed their one-year commitment to Rochester Youth Year, an AmeriCorps VISTA sponsored program that includes seven local colleges.

The IBWSC brings the leaders of tomorrow together to focus on critical thinking skills. This year’s theme will be reaching solutions through play, and keynote speakers include game designer and author Jane McGonigal and Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for The New Yorker magazine.

Combined with the current weakening of EarthÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s magnetic field, the data suggest that the region of EarthÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s core beneath southern Africa may play a special role in reversals of the planetÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s magnetic poles.

The NOAAÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s National Weather Service (NWS) has recognized the Rochester as a StormReady® university for its preparedness to handle all types of severe and potentially life-threatening weather. Rochester is the first private university in New York State to be certified StormReady.

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ is a key partner in a consortium that has won a national competition to advance U.S. photonics manufacturing capability. The new American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics) will be headquartered in Rochester, New York.
