Countries submit to the United States government a list of skills that are in short supply in their country. The Department of State maintains the official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/study\/exchange\/waiver-of-the-exchange-visitor\/exchange-visitor-skills-list.html\"><strong>Exchange Visitor Skills List<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>You\u2019re taking part in graduate medical education or a training program such as residency, intern, or clinical fellowship sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Please note:<\/strong> Even if none of the above criteria is true, officers have discretion (during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/iso\/visas\/application-process\/\">visa interview<\/a> or upon entry into the US) to subject J-1 exchange visitors and their dependents to the home residency requirement by noting so in the visitors\u2019 documents.\r\n\r\n<strong>*<\/strong><em>Regulations state that whatever rules the J-1 principal may be subject to also apply to any family member(s) in the J-2 status.<\/em>","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"}],"sidebar":"show__sidebar","sidebar_feed":"menu_select","menu":"86","page_links":null,"sub_menu":"","content_modules":[{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Waiving the home residency requirement<\/h2>","content":"A waiver process of the two-year home residency requirement is available in limited circumstances.
