However, J-1 scholars may also find this information helpful to better understand the steps and materials needed for processing by the University. <a href=\"\/iso\/contact\/\">Please contact us<\/a>\u00a0if you have any questions.\r\n<h2>New J-1 scholar request for a DS-2019<\/h2>\r\nThe DS-2019 is the immigration document required to apply for a J visa. If your J-1 scholar is new to the University of Rochester, you\u2019ll <strong>first<\/strong> need to <a href=\"https:\/\/myidentity.rochester.edu\/guest\/LoginServlet\">request a URID or guest account for them<\/a>\u00a0before beginning the application process through URcompass.\r\n\r\nOnce the guest account\/URID has been activated, you can log into URCompass to begin the application:\r\n\r\n<a class=\"button button--blue\" href=\"https:\/\/urcompass.ur.rochester.edu\/istart\/controllers\/start\/StartEngine.cfm\">Log into URcompass and initiate a new J-1 scholar request<\/a>\r\n\r\nPlease ensure all required documents are submitted and E-Forms are complete. We cannot process a request for a DS-2019 until we have a complete application. <strong>Please allow for at least three months between the date ISO receives a complete application and the new J-1 scholar's start date.<\/strong>\r\n<h3>Helpful resources<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/iso\/for-departments\/urcompass-resources\/j-1-scholar-initial-walkthrough\/\">Reference the J-1 New Request Guide<\/a>\u00a0as well as the checklist below for an overview of this process. Please contact your Faculty Affairs Administrator with questions.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>An appointment\/invitation letter signed by the appropriate person(s)<\/strong>. The letter must contain at a minimum:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Appointment title<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Dates of program<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Funding amount and sources<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Statement of benefits eligibility or non-eligibility.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>J-1 applicants who are not going to be paid by the University of Rochester <strong>must provide proof of funding<\/strong> and it must be:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Written in English<\/li>\r\n \t<li>On letterhead from the funding source<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Signed by someone with authority to dispense the funds from the funding organization<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Include the specific dates of funding coverage<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Include the amount of funding in US dollars<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Applicants with outside funding must fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/iso\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Visiting-Scientist-PDF-for-Website.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visiting Scientist spouse and children of the J-1 principal are eligible for the J-2 visa status.\u00a0The minimum amount of financial support required for each J-2 dependent is currently $500 per dependent per month; this figure is to be added on to the minimum financial support required for the J-1.\u00a0This figure doesn\u2019t include the cost of health insurance which, for a family, can be very expensive if health insurance won\u2019t be provided to the J-1 principal as a benefit of their appointment.\r\n\r\nIf J-2 dependents are being requested after the J-1 has already arrived in the U.S., complete and
