While most University students receive documentation for the F-1 visa, the J-1 visa is sometimes required by government sponsors. If your sponsor does not require the J-1 visa but you are still expecting to apply for the J-1 visa instead of the F-1 visa, we strongly recommend that you discuss this plan with your <a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.office365.com\/book\/ISO1@uofr.onmicrosoft.com\/?ismsaljsauthenabled=true\">ISO Advisor<\/a> before submitting your NSIF.\r\n\r\nFor either category, you will need a Certificate of Eligibility (F-1 I-20 or J-1 DS-2019) to apply for the appropriate visa. You will be asked to identify which document you are requesting when you complete your New Student Intake Forms (NSIF).\r\n\r\nFor additional information on comparing these visa categories, read the guidance below. You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/study.html\">visit the US Department of State website.<\/a>","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"}],"sidebar":"show__sidebar","sidebar_feed":"menu_select","menu":"26","page_links":null,"sub_menu":"","content_modules":[{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"","content":"<h3><strong>F-1 students (Form I-20)<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>No residency requirements<\/strong> for changing status to another visa category in the future<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Source of funding <\/strong>can come from any combination of sources<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/iso\/visas\/dependents\/\">F-2 dependents<\/a> are <em>not\u00a0<\/em>eligible for employment or full-time study<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/iso\/living\/health-insurance\/\"><strong>Health insurance<\/strong><\/a> is not mandatory by government regulation, but is required by the University and is strongly recommended for all dependents<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmjfee.com\/i901fee\/index.html\"><strong>SEVIS Fee <\/strong><\/a>is required for initial I-20 (not required for dependents)<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"\/iso\/current-students\/working\/f-1-campus\/\"><strong>On-campus employment<\/strong><\/a> is automatically granted during the program<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Off-campus employment<\/strong> can be recommended; <a href=\"\/iso\/current-students\/working\/f-1-opt\/\">Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/a>\u00a0can allow students 12 months (and possibly an additional 24 months for <a href=\"\/iso\/current-students\/working\/f-1-opt\/stem\/\">students in the STEM Fields<\/a>) work authorization related to the field of study.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>J-1 students (Form DS-2019)<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Potential 2-year home-residency requirement<\/strong> (for J-1 and dependents) before gaining eligibility to change or adjust visa status, including long term employment or <a href=\"\/iso\/scholars-employees\/permanent-residence\/\">permanent residency<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-22\/chapter-I\/subchapter-G\/part-62\/subpart-B\/section-62.23\">Source of funding<\/a>:<\/strong> Eligibility for J-1 sponsorship in part depends on how the program will be financially supported. Most commonly, students qualify because they will receive funding support from their home government OR the majority of funding is from sources other than personal or family funds.
