These charges will appear on your URochester term bill. Semester exchange program participants will be billed by URochester for tuition; your host institution will bill you directly for housing.\r\n\r\n<strong>The on-campus accommodation and dining fees will be removed from student bills by mid-January for the spring term.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe bill won\u2019t reflect the registration for your specific education abroad program, but will show any anticipated or expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/finances\/aid\/\">financial aid<\/a>. The standard URochester housing charge covers the basic housing level that the program offers, generally with one or two roommates. Some programs offer optional premium housing, but students who choose it are responsible for the additional costs.","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Non-partner programs","icon":"","row_content":"Costs for non-partner programs vary based on inclusions (room, board, tuition, etc.) and living costs in the host country, currency exchange, and other factors. Keep in mind that, for example, studying in Paris, London, or Tokyo can be much more costly than a semester in Bangkok or Leeds.\r\n\r\nFinancial aid for non-partner programs differs, so <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\">consult with your financial aid counselor<\/a> to determine what types of aid you will be eligible for while abroad and to ensure the aid continues when you return. For more information, visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/finances\/aid\/\">Financial Aid page<\/a>.\r\n\r\nNon-partner program participants will be charged an administrative Study Abroad Fee by the University (<a href=\"#expenses\">review more additional expenses below<\/a>). Students may not take a Leave of Absence and earn study abroad transfer credit.\r\n\r\nStudents attending non-partner programs will be billed by the program\/institution for tuition, room, and fees. Your URochester bill will reflect the non-partner Study Abroad fee.\r\n\r\nNon-partner programs don\u2019t apply toward the University\u2019s <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ccas\/handbook\/enrollment.html\">Enrollment Policy<\/a>. If you\u2019re considering participating in a non-partner program, be sure to discuss the Enrollment Policy with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/contact\/\">Education Abroad Advisor<\/a>.","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Short-term programs","icon":"","row_content":"Billing and financial aid options are different from semester and academic year programs.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Rochester summer faculty-led or organized programs:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you are participating in a summer short-term Rochester faculty-led or organized program (e.g. short-term program offered through the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures), your admission notification will indicate if you need to submit an online deposit to secure your spot.\u00a0 If a deposit is required, the amount will be indicated, and you\u2019ll submit a confirmation deposit to the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adminfinance\/bursar\/payments-and-refunds\/payments-and-refunds\/\">Bursar\u2019s Office<\/a>, payable by check or through URePay. If you register for your program by April, the balance of the program fee will be due by May 10.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Rochester summer partner programs:<\/strong> If you are participating in a summer Rochester partner program, check directly with the partner to determine if a deposit is required to secure your spot. If a deposit is required to confirm participation, submit the deposit directly to the partner.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Non-Partner Programs:<\/strong> You\u2019ll receive a bill from the study abroad program for tuition and fees.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">Regular financial aid doesn\u2019t apply for short-term or to non-partner courses\/programs. Domestic students who receive financial aid during the academic year should consider applying for summer aid because they may be eligible to receive Summer Pell Grant funding and\/or federal loans. Talk this over with your <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\">Financial Aid Counselor<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ugresearch\/funding\/rig.html\">RIG<\/a>\u00a0and <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ugresearch\/funding\/discover-grant\/index.html\">Discover<\/a> Grants may be applicable to education abroad. Read the websites for details.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\">If you\u2019re eligible for a <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gilmanscholarship.org\/\">Gilman Scholarship<\/a> and are applying for a summer program, we strongly encourage you to submit a Gilman application by the early decision date, which is normally in early October. You\u2019ll be notified of the outcome in November, which gives plenty of time to plan for your summer abroad.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Charges when confirming participation","icon":"","row_content":"After being admitted to your education abroad program, your program will let you know by what date you need to confirm participation (normally, two to three weeks after being admitted). For many 糖心传媒 semester programs, you\u2019ll commit to participating by electronically signing an Intent to Enroll form in your record in the Education Abroad Portal. Signing the form represents a non-refundable deposit. If you sign the form and then do not participate in the program, you will be billed for the fee.\r\n\r\nFor most non-糖心传媒 and short-term partner programs, you\u2019ll commit to participating by submitting a non-refundable deposit, to the non-partner program, or to the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adminfinance\/bursar\/\">糖心传媒 Bursar\u2019s Office<\/a> (for partner programs).","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Non-refundable deposits","icon":"","row_content":"Upon admission, students must inform the Center for Education Abroad and the program sponsor of their plans as quickly as possible. Many programs ask for a non-refundable deposit to hold a student's place in the program. Deposits range from $100 to $1,000 and are covered in acceptance materials. The average is around $500. Deposits come out of the program fee; they are not in addition to the fee.\r\n\r\nStudents admitted to semester DIS, IES Abroad, and most partner programs will be asked to submit an Intent to Enroll form, rather than submitting a confirmation deposit. If a student does not participate after submitting this form, they will be responsible for the deposit. Students who participate in summer or other short-term programs must pay a confirmation deposit.\r\n\r\nBefore the start of the term, study abroad programs and universities spend money for students. If a student confirms participation but later decides not to go, they won\u2019t get a refund for the confirmation or housing deposit (if any) and may be charged for any costs that can\u2019t be recovered. Students who are unsure about their plans are encouraged to consult with the Center for Education Abroad before submitting deposits or signing an intent to enroll.\r\n\r\nHousing (including damage and security) deposits are charged by some programs or universities. They\u2019re out-of-pocket expenses that typically need to be paid prior to the program start date. These are usually refundable as long as there is no damage to the housing and the student has met the obligations of the housing and program policies and contracts.","accordion_anchor":""}]}],"sidebar":"show__sidebar","sidebar_feed":"menu_select","menu":"56","page_links":null,"sub_menu":"","content_modules":[{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"expenses","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Additional out-of-pocket expenses<\/h2>","content":"Many students find that going abroad is affordable because of being able to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/finances\/aid\/\">financial aid<\/a>\u00a0 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/finances\/scholarships\/\">scholarships<\/a>\u00a0toward the cost of their program. However, there are out-of-pocket costs that you\u2019ll be responsible for. Most scholarships are applied to your bill, rather than being given to you in the form of a check, so don't count on using it as spending money.\r\n\r\nSome of the most common out-of-pocket expenses are:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Application fee:<\/strong> Most programs don\u2019t charge an application fee. If there is a fee, expect it to be between $30 and $75.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Study Abroad Fee:<\/strong> For non-partner programs only \u2013 $2,240 per semester, $375 for summer and short-term programs (2025-26).<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Housing fees:<\/strong> You may need to pay one or more of these prior to the program start date or upon arrival: housing deposit, security deposit, one month\u2019s rent in advance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Passport and Passport Photo:<\/strong> Visit the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/passport\/passport_1738.html\">US passport and international travel website<\/a> for the most up-to-date information about passport fees and requirements. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/students\/passports-visas\/\">Passports and Visas page<\/a> can also help.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Visas:<\/strong> Costs and entrance requirements vary, but expect to pay between $75 and $560. For details about how to apply for a visa, contact the consulate or embassy of the country where you\u2019ll study. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/education-abroad\/students\/passports-visas\/\">Visas and Passports page<\/a> can also help.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.25rem;\"><strong>Health Insurance:<\/strong> All students need to be covered by health insurance while abroad. Check whether your current policy will cover you while you're abroad. Some programs\/foreign universities require you to subscribe to their health plan. Costs range from $30 to $300.
