Redefining success: How Derek Nowicki ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™90 found fresh purpose through Career Resources

“What these programs did for me,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Derek explained, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œwas reawaken the mindset I had back in school. That sense that the world is full of possibilities. It wasnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t just about making a career pivotÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”it was about reimagining whatÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s possible at any stage of life.”

For many professionals in their 50s, making a career changeÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”or even considering oneÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”can feel daunting. After decades of experience, well-worn routines, and the weight of expectations, pivoting or reimagining oneÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s path often seems out of reach. But for Derek Nowicki ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™90, the decision to connect with the University of RochesterÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s alumni career programs wasnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t just a helpful stepÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”it was a catalyst for renewed energy, curiosity, and possibility.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œI wasnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t necessarily unhappy with my work,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Derek recalls. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œBut I knew I needed something to change. I had this strong sense that there was more I could do, or do differentlyÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”but I didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t know what that looked like.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

A serendipitous start

DerekÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s reengagement with the University happened organically. As he helped plan his upcoming class Reunion, a conversation led to an introduction to Michelle Cavalcanti from the UniversityÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s alumni career servicesÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”and the start of something transformative.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œI didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t go in with a clear plan,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ he says. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œI just knew I needed to take a step back and reassess. What had I done? What did I still want to do? Where could I go from here?ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

Through personalized coaching, Derek began attending virtual workshops on leveraging transferable skills, refining personal branding, and creating a vision-driven career identity. These sessions didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t give him a linear pathÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”they gave him something more powerful: a fresh perspective.

Reframing the narrative

Rather than abandoning his 20+ year career in New York real estate, Derek began to reimagine how he could do the work differently. Through conversations within the Rochester network, he didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t throw everything outÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”he rediscovered the parts of his career that aligned with his passions and values and let go of the ones that didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œI shifted how I approached my work. I let go of some old routines, infused more fun, and began exploring other opportunities simultaneously. And interestingly, everything started to flow better.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

Instead of chasing certainty, Derek chose exploration. And what he found was not a single outcome, but a ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œcornucopia of possibilities.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

The power of community

One of the most energizing aspects of DerekÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™s journey has been the support of the alumni network. He connected with several alumni, each of whom responded enthusiasticallyÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”many scheduling Zoom calls within hours of the introduction.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThe conversations were real. Thoughtful. And none of them were under an hour,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ he laughs. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œWhat that showed me is that Rochester alumni genuinely care. They want to give back. They want to help.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

From practical advice about exploring new cities to conversations about career transitions, these connections reaffirmed for Derek just how strong and giving the Rochester community isÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”even decades after graduation.

Reawakening curiosity and confidence

Derek describes his experience with the career resources as ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œa rejuvenation of spirit.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ He found himself more curious, more engaged, and more open to life than he had been in years. What began as a search for career clarity turned into a broader transformation.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œChange doesnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t have to be all or nothing,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ he says. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œYou can pivot without burning down everything youÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™ve built. Sometimes, you just need to shift your mindsetÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”and the way you show up in your work.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

He remains active in real estate, but now approaches his work with renewed creativity and possibility. And he’s continuing to explore what else might be on the horizon.

A message to fellow alumni

For other alumniÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”especially those in mid-careerÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”Derek offers this advice:

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œYouÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™re not too old to learn something new. YouÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™re not too far along to change course. YouÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™re not locked into anything unless you decide you are.ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

He urges others to start small: reach out to a classmate, attend a webinar, or connect with the career center.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThe University didnÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½™t stop supporting us when we graduated,ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ he says. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½œThey are still hereÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½”and the door is wide open.
